Trillanes asks DOJ to scrap Binay libel

Trillanes asks DOJ to scrap Binay libel suitCiting parliamentary immunity and public welfare, Senator Antonio Trillanes IV asked the Department of Justice (DOJ) on Thursday to dismiss the libel case filed against him by suspended Makati Mayor Jejomar Erwin “Junjun” Binay on allegations that he spent P50-million to bribe two Court of Appeals (CA) justices to secure a stay order on his first preventive suspension over the allegedly anomalous construction of the Makati City Hall Building II.

In his 44-page counter-affidavit with motion to dismiss, Trillanes said he disclosed the information about the alleged bribery in his capacity as a senator and as author of Senate Resolution No. 826 which seeks probe on the alleged P1,601-billion overpricing of the Makati City Hall II Parking Building and other related anomalies.

“There can be no doubt that whatsoever that he did so in the performance of his official duties and functions as a member of the legislature,” Trillanes’ counter-affidavit stated citing Article VI, Section 11 of the 1987 Constitution.

HMS Edinburgh sets sail for scrap in Turkey

A HISTORIC Navy destroyer yesterday left Britain for the last time to be sold for scrap in Turkey after a campaign to turn it into tourist attraction in Edinburgh ended in failure.

It had been hoped that HMS Edinburgh, the last of the Royal Navy’s Type 42 destroyers, would find a new home in Leith.

But after proposed costs for the venture were deemed too high, the ship – the largest in its class – was sold to a Turkish scrap merchant, a fate which befell her sister ships, HMS Manchester and HMS Liverpool.

Maritime enthusiasts and members of the Navy gathered yesterday afternoon to bid the 463ft vessel a final farewell as it set sail from Portsmouth.

Known as the ‘Fortress of the Sea’, the ship – built in 1980 by the Cammell Laird yard at Birkenhead, Merseyside – was deployed to the Gulf in 2003 during the Iraq war, escorting helicopter carrier HMS Ocean and supporting Royal Marines ashore. She underwent a £17.5million refit in 2010 but was decommissioned three years later.  http://www.scotsman.com/news/scotland/top-stories/hms-edinburgh-sets-sail-for-scrap-in-turkey-1-3857179

49ers TC10: Kaepernick connects with Vernon Davis; first scrap of training camp

Colin Kaepernick had perhaps his best practice of training camp, one that included a big, seam-route throw to tight end Vernon Davis.

That was once a staple of the 49ers offense, both when Alex Smith was under center and when Kaepernick took over as starter. But it disappeared for virtually all of last season. Davis' longest play of the year? A 29-yard touchdown in Week 1. He didn't have any touchdowns from that point on.

On Wednesday, however, the 49ers were working just outside of the red zone when Davis took off. Tramaine Brock, working as the nickel cornerback, picked him up and Kaepernick lofted a pass that hit the tight end five yards before the end line. Davis spiked the ball at Brock's feet afterward for emphasis. Craig Dahl also was back in coverage on the play.

Overall, Kaepernick went 11-14 in 11-on-11 or team drills. Another end-zone throw -- this one to running back Carlos Hyde -- was more precarious, but had similar results.

Kaepernick bought extra time to throw on a broken play and saw Hyde come free in the end zone. He threw a dart to the tailback that initially deflected straight into the air but was brought down by Hyde for a touchdown.

**********************

Why is Anquan Boldin Kaepernick's favorite target. An early-practice throw underscored the answer. Kaepernick was throwing a short-range pass to Boldin when Brock, adept at jumping routes, tried to get in front of the pass. Boldin, who is one of the strongest receivers in the league, essentially screened off the cornerback and instead of an interception, Brock only deflected the ball in the air. Boldin then outmuscled Brock for the reception.
